The Yufeng Lamasery sits at the foot of the Yulong
Snow Mountain in its south, 13 kilometers away from the ancient
town. Built in the last year of the Kangxi Period of the Qing
dynasty, it is one of the five important Lamaist temples in
Lijiang. The layout of the Main Hall is a courtyard consisting of
a gate tower, the main hall, and two side halls.
In the middle of the northwest courtyard grows a
remarkable ancient camellia tree about 500 years old and is famous
throughout the country. Each year, it puts forth thousands of
blossoms group by group in late February or early March. The tree
is strong with exuberant foliage and the blossoms are gorgeous
with 9 stamens (pistils) and 18 petals for each. It is acclaimed
as "the King of Camellia."
