The Fuxian Lake is the second largest deep freshwater lake in
China. Its water surface covers 212 square kilometres and reaches
a depth of 155
metres. The storage capacity of this lake is 12 times that of the
Dianchi
Lake and 6 times that of the Erhai Lake. The water in the lake is
crystal
clear and appears to be blue-green. From a boat you can see fish
swimming
seven metres beneath the surface. In the southern mountains, the
1-kilometer Haimen River joins Fuxian and Xingyun Lakes in Jiangchuan
County. A
stone marking the boundary of the two lakes is called the"Fish
Boundary",
as big-headed fish (Cypinus pellegrini) in the Xingyun Lake and
the
Kanglang fish (Anabrarilinus grahami) in the Fuxian Lake both swim
to
this rock, but never pass it to enter the other lake.
Although the big-headed fish from the Xingyun Lake has a
delicious
taste, it is not as famous as the Kanglang fish from the Fuxian
Lake. As
early as Emperor Kangxi's time in the Qing Dynasty, the Kanglang
fish was
considered a suitable gift for emperors.
